Overview

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the Metaverse enabled by edge-computing technologies, that is, the edge-enabled Metaverse. It discusses how the edge-enabled Metaverse can be realized from the perspectives of communication and computation, respectively. The chapter focuses on next-generation communication architectures such as human-in-the-loop communication and real-time synchronization between the physical and virtual worlds. It discusses the realization from the communication and computing perspectives about edge- computing technologies for the Metaverse, respectively. The implementation of the Metaverse is based on the execution of the following computation tasks: high-dimensional data processing; 3D virtual world rendering; and avatar computing. Implementing the Metaverse with edge-computing technologies will initially enable efficient immersive streaming and social interaction for network edge users. Edge intelligence is seen as the cornerstone of the edge computing-enabled Metaverse and the ultimate goal of the Metaverse for a realistic edge network implementation.
